Walked in his steps from the American Club in a downtown skyscraper to his private and corporate lawyers’ offices to the Jockey Club’ swankiest restaurant at the horse track. He and other Americans I met there were so proud of being treated like honored “Old China Hands” until, in his case, his Mainland Chinese counterparts felt they’d gotten all the USA tech they needed to reverse engineer it and enough time to set up their aristocratic insider little emperors and empresses to grab the royal lions’ share of all future profits. Then, I watched those Chinese little darlings buy the most expensive homes they could buy in California and British Columbia.
History rinse and repeat. Just like the old Spanish Empire with its Spanish Inquisition’s oppressive censorship, trade monopolies, and its kings’ nearly three century ability to turn gold and silver from the Americas and Asian trade goods via the Philippines into endless European wars.
